How to pick a dentist in Nikol without getting burned
A straight checklist for picking a trustworthy Nikol dentist. Autoclave, X-rays, written prices, and the red flags families in East Ahmedabad keep missing.
I run a dental clinic on Haridarshan Road in Nikol. Every single week, a patient walks in and says some version of the same thing. They went somewhere else first. They got quoted forty thousand rupees for one tooth. They just want a second opinion. Sometimes the first clinic was right. Sometimes the plan was three times what the tooth actually needed. Without a checklist, families have no way to tell.
Nikol changed fast. Ten years ago you had maybe six or seven dental clinics around Bhakti Circle. Now there is a signboard on nearly every lane from Nikol Gam to Naroda Road. Some are excellent. Some are weekend side-businesses run by visiting doctors from other cities. This is the checklist I give my own cousins when they ask me where to go.
1. Is the dentist actually a dentist
In Gujarat, only someone registered with the Gujarat State Dental Council is legally allowed to drill your tooth, pull it, or place an implant. Every real dentist has a GSDC registration number. That number is public. You can look it up at dciindia.gov.in in about thirty seconds.
Before you book anywhere in Nikol or East Ahmedabad, ask to see the doctor's BDS degree and council registration. A good clinic will have it framed on the wall. A sketchy one will get defensive.
2. Sterilisation you can actually see
This is the biggest gap between a good Nikol clinic and an average one. Real sterilisation means every instrument that goes into your mouth is cleaned, packed in a sealed pouch, and run through an autoclave after the last patient. Not wiped with spirit. Not dipped in Dettol. Autoclaved.
At Shreeji Dental we run a Class B autoclave and keep the spore test logs at reception. You are allowed to ask for them. If a clinic refuses to show you their sterilisation area, walk out. That single answer tells you everything.
- Ask directly. Can I see the autoclave.
- Look for sealed pouches opened in front of you at the chair.
- Disposable items like suction tips, needles, and saliva ejectors should be pulled out of sealed packets, not from an open box.
- A strong chemical smell is not the same thing as sterility. Do not be fooled by it.
3. Does the plan match the X-ray
A real dentist takes an X-ray before quoting anything beyond a cleaning. An IOPA for one tooth. An OPG if things are bigger. And then, and this is the important part, they show you the image on a screen and walk you through what they see.
If you are being told you need four root canals and you have not seen a single X-ray, that is a red flag. If you are being told you need zero root canals even though you have been in pain for a week, that is also a red flag. In the opposite direction.
Bring any old X-rays you already have. A clinic that is confident in its diagnosis will welcome a second opinion. We do it every week at Shreeji Dental and half the time we tell the patient their existing plan was fine. Go ahead with it.
4. Pricing in writing. Always.
In Nikol, the price for the same procedure can vary three times between two clinics on the same road. That is not automatically dishonest. A proper ceramic crown really does cost more than a metal one. An Osstem implant really does cost more than a cheap Chinese copy. But the reason for the price difference should be explained on paper, not hidden.
Ask for four things before any work starts.
- A line by line written estimate, signed.
- A clear split between what you actually need and what is optional.
- Which exact materials will be used. Implant brand name. Crown type. Denture base.
- What happens if something goes wrong. Is the follow up visit free. Is there a warranty. For how long.
If a dentist in Nikol cannot tell you in writing what you are paying for and why, you are not the patient in that conversation. You are the product.

5. Can you reach them at 9 PM
Most dental emergencies happen at night or on a Sunday. A lost crown the night before a wedding. A bleeding extraction site at 11 PM. Post-op pain that will not settle no matter what you take. Ask your clinic what happens if you call at 9 PM on a Saturday.
A real clinic gives you a WhatsApp number that actually gets read. At Shreeji Dental, I answer post-op messages myself. Honestly, ninety percent of the scary calls get fixed with a thirty second voice note at midnight. That is why the number exists.
6. The language thing
This one gets ignored and it matters a lot. If your mother speaks mostly Gujarati and the dentist only explains things in English medical terms, half the consent conversation is lost. She is nodding because she is being polite, not because she understood.
We consult in Gujarati, Hindi, and English at Shreeji Dental. For our NRI patients flying in from Melbourne or Toronto, we keep all the treatment notes in English so their regular dentist back home can continue care without re-starting the file. You get the explanation in the language that makes you comfortable, and the records in the language your other dentist reads.
The 60 second checklist
- BDS degree and GSDC number visible on the wall.
- You can see the autoclave. Sealed pouches open at the chair.
- X-ray taken and shown to you before any big plan.
- Written, signed, line by line estimate with material names.
- A WhatsApp number that actually gets answered after hours.
- Consultation in a language you are comfortable in.
Six out of six, you have a real dentist. Three out of six, you have a gamble. That is the bar we hold ourselves to at Shreeji Dental Care and Implant Center on Haridarshan Road. That is the bar you should hold us to. And every other clinic in Nikol.
One last thing. The best dentist in Nikol for you is not always the one with the biggest signboard. It is the one whose answers you can verify standing in their reception.
Frequently asked
- Who is the best dentist in Nikol, Ahmedabad?
- The best dentist in Nikol is the one whose sterilisation, diagnosis, and pricing you can verify in person. Look for a BDS degree with a Gujarat State Dental Council registration number, a visible autoclave, written estimates, and post-treatment WhatsApp support. Dr. Zalak Jansari has been practising on Haridarshan Road for 12 years and consults in Gujarati, Hindi, and English.
- How much does a dental consultation cost in Nikol?
- A basic consultation with an IOPA X-ray in Nikol usually runs between 200 and 500 rupees. Most established clinics including Shreeji Dental waive the consultation fee for first time patients and for NRI families visiting from abroad. A full mouth OPG adds around 400 to 600 rupees if it is needed.
- Are Nikol dental clinics safe for children?
- Yes, but only if the clinic is actually set up for children. That means child sized instruments, a doctor trained in behaviour management, and someone patient enough to run a tell show do session before touching the child. Ask directly whether the clinic treats children regularly. At Shreeji Dental we see kids from Nikol, Naroda, and New Naroda every week.
- Do dentists in Nikol accept insurance or EMI?
- Most private Nikol clinics take cash, UPI, and cards. A growing number including Shreeji Dental offer no cost EMI via Bajaj Finserv or Razorpay for treatments above 15,000 rupees. Cashless dental insurance is still rare in Gujarat. Most insurers reimburse you after the fact, not at the clinic counter.
